The photographic possibilities
No preset shot list can control a wild bird. The goal is to put you in position and prepare you for the range of moments winter Eagles can offer.

Work the light, reflection and split-second lift from the river.

Build focus and tracking skills for fast passes against changing backgrounds.

Anticipate the moments when eagles approach, challenge and cross paths.

Prepare for speed, spray and wing position close to the water.

Use quiet observation to create expressive portraits and behavioral frames.

Place the bird inside the winter river landscape and available light.

Local knowledge matters
There is no single workshop spot that works every day.
Ryan watches current Eagle activity, open water, wind and light across multiple locations. The plan can change before sunrise or halfway through the day when another stretch of river is producing a better opportunity.
Ryan leads between shooting locations and participants follow in their own vehicle. Exact Eagle locations stay private to protect the birds and the places that make this workshop possible.
A flexible field day
The schedule is a working rhythm, not a fixed tour route. Ryan changes the timing and location when the conditions call for it.
Meet near the river, read the conditions and tune your camera before the first opportunity.
Work the strongest activity with direct coaching on position, exposure and autofocus.
Study the files, make precise adjustments and move when another location offers more.
Put the morning lessons to work while conditions and Eagle behavior continue to change.
Finish with intentional backgrounds, warmer light and a stronger plan for every pass.

I did an eagle workshop in St. Louis with Ryan earlier this year. Ryan told me he would take me to where the eagles were and he sure delivered! The primary spot was not available because of construction, so he redirected us to a spot that turned out to be better. He is an excellent guide, very knowledgeable about camera gear and an expert with Photoshop. I would highly recommend his services to anyone interested and I intend to join him on another workshop soon!Eg Robichaux · September 8, 2024
What you will learn
You and Ryan meet online to edit your workshop photographs using Lightroom, Photoshop and Topaz tools as appropriate. The session is recorded so you can revisit the complete workflow later.
The goal is clean detail, natural color and a repeatable process for high-ISO wildlife files.
Student proof
Ryan can make great Eagle photographs, but so can photographers learning from Ryan. These images were created by participants who joined Ryan in the field.

Why private
The coaching changes with your equipment, experience and images instead of asking you to fit a preset lesson.
Camera setup is based on your autofocus system, controls and lenses.
Teaching starts with what you know and what you want to improve.
Feedback is tied to the files you are making while the decisions still matter.
The day moves when you are ready or when the Eagles give us a reason to move.
Choose your workshop
Both options are fully private and include the same personal preparation, field instruction and recorded editing session.
Best if your travel window is short or you want an intensive introduction to Eagle photography with direct coaching.
Changing wildlife behavior, weather, wind and river conditions can make Day B look completely different from Day A. Two days increase the chance of seeing a wider range of behavior without promising any specific event.
Learn the locations, build your setup and respond to the conditions in front of you.
Apply what clicked immediately while a new day brings different light and behavior.
Who this is for
Build a dependable setup and understand the decisions behind it without being rushed by a group.
Improve flight consistency, timing and composition through immediate field feedback.
Refine position, behavior reading and the small choices that separate a record shot from a finished photograph.
2027 winter availability
Available January 16 through February 10. Open dates can be booked directly. Reserved or sold dates are disabled on the live calendar.
Plan with confidence
Workshop meeting areas are generally about one hour from St. Louis Lambert International Airport. Participants need their own vehicle and follow Ryan between locations. Exact meeting directions and lodging guidance are shared privately after booking.
Bring your camera, charged batteries, memory cards and the longest telephoto lens you own. A 400 to 600mm reach is useful. Dress for cold, wind, mud and snow. Ryan sends a complete preparation guide before the workshop.
An honest wildlife workshop
The Eagles may be present while the photographs available on two days look completely different.
Ryan cannot control a wild bird. He can scout, read the conditions, move when necessary and prepare you to make the most of the opportunities that happen. That is the value of local knowledge plus private instruction.

Meet Ryan
Ryan Oswald is a St. Louis photographer and educator who has spent years watching winter Eagles along the region’s rivers. He knows that locating the birds is only the first part of making a strong image. The rest comes from understanding wind, behavior, light, camera setup and timing. During a private workshop, Ryan explains those decisions as they happen. He gives you room to photograph then steps in with specific feedback you can use on the next pass. After the field day, the instruction continues online as you work through your own files from selection to final edit. The goal is not a borrowed settings recipe. It is a system you can take into every future wildlife encounter.

Weather, wind, river conditions and recent feeding can change Eagle behavior from one day to the next. Two days provide another set of conditions plus a chance to apply the lessons from Day 1 during Day 2.
No ethical wildlife workshop can promise a sighting or specific behavior. Ryan uses current conditions, recent activity and years of local field experience to choose the best available opportunity. Eagles remain wild and are never staged or baited.
No. All experience levels are welcome. Because the workshop is private, the day can begin with camera setup or move directly into advanced autofocus, exposure and behavior.
Bring a camera with continuous autofocus and the longest telephoto lens you own. A 400 to 600mm reach is useful. Ryan can also help you get the most from a shorter lens.
Very little. Most locations require minimal walking on winter surfaces. Cold, wind, mud, snow and uneven ground are possible, so share any mobility concerns before booking.
No. Flights, a rental car, lodging, meals and travel insurance are separate. Participants drive their own vehicle and follow Ryan between locations. Exact directions are provided privately after booking.
Ryan adapts locations and timing to the conditions. Safety comes first. If severe weather makes the day unsafe, Ryan will coordinate the best available alternative.
