Ryan photographs landscapes, wildlife and night skies, then teaches the decisions that make the photograph work: where to stand, when to return, what to simplify and how to finish the file without losing the feeling of the place.

Ryan’s work is built around places worth returning to. On the Oregon Coast and in the Redwoods, the San Juan Mountains of Colorado, the New Mexico Badlands and along winter rivers for Bald Eagles, he pays attention to what shifts with the season, the forecast and the light.

That repetition shapes the way he teaches. Rather than handing over a fixed recipe, Ryan helps photographers read the conditions, make an intentional composition and understand the tradeoffs behind each choice.

The goal is not to copy a frame. It is to leave with a process you can use when the weather changes, the subject moves or the first plan falls apart.

Ryan’s instruction connects fieldcraft, composition and finishing. A strong file starts before the shutter: with the timing, the viewpoint and the reason the viewer’s eye will move through the frame.

His Visual Pathways framework gives photographers shared language for entry, movement, hero, support and resolution. It is a way to explain why one photograph holds attention and another does not.

Ryan is red/green color-vision deficient. That experience has made color relationships, value and contrast a deliberate part of his process, both in the field and in post-processing.
