Start with sleep and weather protection

A warm sleeping system and dependable shelter matter more than novelty gear. Match the temperature rating to the actual location, keep wet equipment away from sleep layers and practice the setup before a long trip.

Plan power around the photographs

Count camera batteries, headlamp use and device charging before choosing a power system. Keep charged and depleted batteries separated so a dark predawn start does not become a guessing game.

Make the camera easy to reach

Store the working camera and essential layers where they can be reached quickly. A beautiful change in light may last only minutes. Camp organization should shorten the distance between noticing it and making the frame.

Technique becomes useful when it responds to the scene. The goal is a decision process you can carry into changing conditions.
