Light from the side for texture

Light placed near the camera flattens a surface. Move the source to the side so rocks, trees and buildings develop shape. Keep the beam moving during the exposure to soften edges and avoid obvious hot spots.

Use less light than you think

The foreground only needs enough illumination to belong with the sky. Begin with a short pass at low power, review the histogram and build gradually. It is easier to add another exposure than to recover clipped detail.

Match the color to the story

A warm source can separate the foreground from a cool sky, but the contrast should feel intentional. Gel the light or adjust white balance so the added illumination supports the scene instead of calling attention to the technique.

Ryan's field note

Technique becomes useful when it responds to the scene. The goal is a decision process you can carry into changing conditions.
