Observe how distance changes a scene

Leonardo studied how contrast, color and detail weaken with distance. Landscape photographers can use the same observation by letting foregrounds carry stronger texture while distant forms become quieter and cooler.

Use light to describe form

Shape becomes convincing when light transitions gradually across it. Look for side light, reflected light and soft shadow that reveal the volume of terrain instead of depending only on saturated color.

Edit for depth instead of impact alone

Global contrast can collapse layers into one plane. Make smaller local changes that preserve separation between near and far areas. The most dimensional edit often uses less contrast overall and places it more deliberately.

Ryan's field note

Technique becomes useful when it responds to the scene. The goal is a decision process you can carry into changing conditions.
